GPS Device or Android Phone: Which Tracker Should You Use?

You can start tracking an Object in Jitra from two different kinds of location source: a compatible dedicated GPS device or an Android phone running Jitra Tracker.

Both can place an Object on the map, but they are built for different operating conditions. The right choice depends on whether tracking is temporary or permanent, who maintains the source, what power is available, and which telemetry your operation needs.

The short answer

Use Jitra Tracker on Android when you want a flexible way to start, run a pilot, or track an Object that stays with a managed phone.

Use a dedicated GPS device when tracking needs to remain installed, operate with less user involvement, or use vehicle power and supported hardware telemetry.

A phone can be the fastest way to test the workflow. A dedicated device is usually the stronger long-term source for an unattended vehicle or asset.

How Jitra Tracker works

Jitra Tracker turns a compatible Android phone into the location source for one Jitra Object.

The Organization admin creates an Object and selects Jitra Tracker as its source. The phone can then be connected using a QR code, activation link, or temporary code. After the required precise and background location permissions are enabled, the mobile user can start tracking.

While tracking is active, the app sends location points to Jitra. If connectivity is temporarily unavailable, pending locations can be queued and synchronized when the app receives another opportunity to connect.

The app also exposes status and diagnostics so the user can see permission, battery optimization, synchronization, connectivity, and binding conditions.

How a dedicated GPS device works

A dedicated GPS tracker is installed on or carried with the vehicle or asset. A compatible model is configured to send its data to Jitra through its supported protocol.

Unlike a smartphone app, a hardwired tracker can use vehicle power and continue operating without depending on a user to keep a phone charged, connected, and correctly configured.

Available data depends on the device, protocol, installation, and sensors. Some devices can provide ignition, power, inputs, or other telemetry; others may only provide location and movement data. Always confirm the exact model and capability before deployment.

Choose Android when flexibility matters

Jitra Tracker is a practical option when:

  • you want to try Jitra before purchasing or installing hardware;
  • tracking is temporary, mobile, or part of a pilot;
  • the Android phone remains with the Object being tracked;
  • a user can maintain permissions, charging, connectivity, and app state;
  • location tracking is sufficient without vehicle-specific hardware telemetry.

This can reduce the time and cost needed to evaluate a tracking workflow. It also creates a simple entry point for one Object before a larger rollout.

Choose a GPS device when continuity matters

A dedicated GPS device is usually better when:

  • the tracker must remain permanently associated with a vehicle or asset;
  • tracking should not depend on someone carrying or maintaining a phone;
  • the source needs vehicle power or a purpose-built battery configuration;
  • supported ignition, input, sensor, or specialized telemetry is required;
  • the deployment includes many vehicles and a standardized installation process.

The hardware does not remove every operational dependency. Installation quality, power, network coverage, configuration, and device compatibility still affect the data received by Jitra.

What both sources can do in Jitra

After valid location data reaches Jitra, the Object can participate in the core tracking experience available to its Organization, including:

  • current location and movement context;
  • history and playback according to the active retention entitlement;
  • places and geofences;
  • supported Event rules and notifications;
  • reports, sharing, and access from Jitra Web or Mobile where available.

The interface can be similar, but the telemetry is not necessarily identical. Jitra can only display and process fields that the selected source actually provides.

Key differences to consider

Setup

Android uses app activation, permissions, and Start Tracking. A dedicated device needs a compatible model, physical placement or installation, and the correct server or protocol configuration.

Power

A phone depends on its battery and charging routine. A dedicated device may use vehicle power, an internal battery, or another purpose-built power arrangement depending on the model.

Background operation

Android controls how apps run in the background. Permissions, battery optimization, connectivity, force stop, and device settings can affect continuity. A dedicated device avoids the mobile app lifecycle, although it still depends on power, signal, and configuration.

Telemetry

Jitra Tracker provides location data and mobile diagnostics. Dedicated devices may provide additional fields when the hardware, protocol, and installation support them.

User involvement

A phone source is visible and controllable by the mobile user. A dedicated device is normally intended to operate with less daily interaction once installed.

A practical decision checklist

Start with Jitra Tracker if you answer “yes” to most of these questions:

  • Do you want to evaluate Jitra before installing hardware?
  • Is the tracking period temporary or limited?
  • Will the phone stay with the Object?
  • Can someone maintain charging and Android permissions?
  • Is location tracking the main requirement?

Start with a dedicated GPS device if you answer “yes” to most of these:

  • Must tracking remain active without user interaction?
  • Will the tracker stay permanently installed?
  • Do you need vehicle power or supported sensor data?
  • Are you standardizing deployment across several vehicles?
  • Is the device model already listed as compatible with Jitra?

You can change the source strategy as you grow

The first source does not have to be the final architecture. An individual or business can begin with Jitra Tracker to understand the workflow, then move suitable Objects to dedicated GPS devices for permanent operation.

A business that already owns compatible GPS trackers may connect those devices from the start. Jitra does not require every customer to purchase new hardware.

Create an account, add your first Object, and choose the source that matches your current operating condition. Start free, explore Jitra Tracker, or check Supported Devices.
